PT STUDENTS APPLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE

May is National Physiotherapy Month and physiotherapists, physiotherapist assistants and students across the country organize events to connect with their local communities. OPA offers members in Ontario items to help them start conversations including brochures, pens, water bottles, sticky notes and the option to borrow one of OPA’s banners. This year, over 130 members ordered items to help them at their local events.
Goodlife Marathon

On May 5, 2019 a group of first year PT students from U of T and a couple of clinicians from the community came out to the finish line of the GoodLife Marathon to provide a stretching station for the runners after their race. The first year students had just completed five weeks of their first clinical internship, and this was an amazing opportunity for them to build on the skills they have been developing, apply them to a different setting, and also to promote our profession.

The group was set up at the finish line alongside the massage therapy tables. Each student had their own stretching table and had the opportunity to work one-on-one with each runner to provide passive stretching and education about home stretching programs. The students really enjoyed interacting with the runners and being able to see the various ways in which the body responds to prolonged, extensive activity. There was incredible energy at the event, and we’re hoping to see this program grow year to year!
